Coveney: This has been a good week for Brexit

The Tánaiste Simon Coveney says that the recent resignations from British Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet have been good for Brexit.

His comments come on the back of Boris Johnson and David Davis stepping down as Foreign Secretary and Brexit Secretary respectively earlier in the week.

The Tánaiste believes this has clarified the British negotiation position.

Minister Coveney says Theresa May had to show her authority.

"Actually despite all of the political movement and challenges in Westminster I think this has been a good week for Brexit," Mr Coveney said.

"There was always going to be a moment in time that was needed for the British Prime Minister to show her authority because she had a very divided cabinet on the approach to Brexit.

"While that division was there, it was impossible to start a proper, formal negotiation on what the future relationship would look like."
