Couple escape unhurt after shot fired into Mayfield home

A couple were lucky to escape unhurt this morning after a shot was fired at their Mayfield home, today's Evening Echo reports.

Gardaí are investigating if the house in Avonmore Park, Old Youghal Road, was targeted mistakenly as the residents are highly respected in the local community and have no links to criminality.

The incident happened just before 1am.

A piece of steel removed from the front garden of the house in Avonmore Park by gardaí will help establish what weapon was used to fire the shot.

The couple were asleep in an upstairs room when they were awoken by a loud bang.

Senior gardaí said this morning the people living in the house were “decent people”.

Inspector Mary King this morning appealed for help from the public.

She said: “If anyone has seen anything around the area of Avonmore Park, we would like to hear from them.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Mayfield gardaí on (021) 4558510.
