Councillors meet on Poolbeg incinerator, but are powerless to stop it

Dublin City Council meets this evening for a meeting on the future of the controversial Poolbeg Incinerator.

The majority of city councillors oppose the multi million euro facility – but they have no power to overturn the decision of the council chief executive to green light the project, which has cost over €100m so far.

"What started off as something to do with Dublin's waste, is now going to be funnelling in hundreds of trucks every day to Ringsend," Green Party Councillor Ciaran Cuffe said the facility will have a major negative impact.

"When we started off, Ringsend wasn't scheduled for development. But since then, we've had all kinds of master plans for the Docklands area."

Earlier, Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan issued a statement saying tonight's meeting is a "sham".

"The Protection of Environment Act puts all the decision making power with the management. This is a travesty. Dublin City Council has consistently voted against this option," he said.

"But unfortunately consecutive government and management has ignored the democratic wishes of Dublin. Tonight's meeting further undermines democracy."

He said his party favours a concentrated waste reduction campaign to reduce the large volumes of waste that currently make the incinerator necessary.
