The Tánaiste, Mary Coughlan, has attacked some of the recommendations in the controversial Bord Snip Nua report.

The Government-commissioned report, published earlier this year, identified around €5bn worth of cuts that could be made by the Fianna Fáil-Green Party coalition.

Many of them have already attracted criticism from the opposition and from various lobby groups.

Speaking in the Dáil this morning, Ms Coughlan said she herself also believed many of the recommendations "don't make sense".

However, she said the Government had to make "appropriate savings in order to deal with the economic and financial difficulties that we have in this country".
