Coughlan: General Election date a matter for Taoiseach alone

The Tánaiste has said the date for the next General Election will be decided by the Taoiseach, once important legislation is passed in the Dáil.

The Tánaiste has said the date for the next General Election will be decided by the Taoiseach, once important legislation is passed in the Dáil.

Her comments follow a tweet earlier today from Longford-Westmeath TD Mary O'Rourke who said: "Hey Brian, will you please name the date. We are tired waiting".

Mary Coughlan told Highland Radio it was highly likely that we would be going to the polls in the month of March.

Asked whether she thought Mary O'Rourke should already be aware of this, she said: "Well, Mary O'Rourke is a backbencher…The Fianna Fáil Cabinet members have not considered this with the Taoiseach."

She added that it was a matter for the Taoiseach to decide the date of the Election.
