Local residents opposed to the Corrib pipeline in north Co Mayo are vowing to maintain an indefinite protest at the site of the Bellanaboy gas terminal.

Yesterday, around 170 gardaí moved in to break up a blockade of the site and allow Shell to resume work on the terminal.

The Shell to Sea campaign group has slammed the move and has accused the authorities of doing the global oil firm's "dirty work".

The group decided at a meeting last night to maintain a permanent protest at the terminal.
