Coronavirus: Over 5,000 confirmed cases in Ireland as HSE announces 16 more deaths

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland has surpassed 5,000, the National Public Health Emergency Team have confirmed.

Sixteen more people diagnosed with Covid-19 have died, bringing the number of deaths related to the virus to 174.

There are also 370 new confirmed cases – bringing the total to 5,364.

Of the most recently announced deaths, 11 are located in the east of the country, four in the north-west and one in the west.

Ten of the 16 who passed away were men and the median age of today’s reported deaths is 78.

HSE chief Paul Reid yesterday said that, due to an increase of laboratory capacity, tests will increase from 2,500 to 4,500 a day.

As of Saturday, 1,263 cases of Covid-19 were seen in healthcare workers.

In the North, seven more deaths were announced today, bringing the total there to 70.
