A 36-year-old man was seriously injured in the face in an overnight assault in Cork city.

A 36-year-old man was seriously injured in the face in an overnight assault in Cork city.

He is being treated at Cork University Hospital, where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The assault happened between 12.30am and 1.45am this morning at the junction of Lavitt's Quay and St Patrick's Bridge in the city.

Gardaí believe that the incident involved a number of men and women who left the scene in the direction of Bridge Street.

Gardaí at Anglesea Street garda station have appealed for any witnesses, or anyone with any information, to come forward.
