Latest: Investigation launched after train after engine catches fire

Update 2.04m: Iarnród Éireann is to investigate the cause of an engine fire on one of its trains this morning.

Operations and schedules are now returning to normal after the train stopped at Clongriffin Station to allow Dublin City Fire Brigade to inspect the fire.

“Shortly before 10.30hrs, as the 09.40hrs Drogheda to Pearse commuter service approached Clongriffin Station this morning, the driver was alerted by automated systems to a small engine fire on one of the engines,” a statement from Iarnród Éireann read.

“The train is a four-carriage diesel multiple unit commuter train, with integral engines underneath each carriage.

“As a precaution, he alerted our Central Traffic Control to alert the fire services and detrained customers immediately upon arrival at Clongriffin.

“The train’s automatic fire suppression system had activated, and extinguished the fire before the fire services arrived.

“While the fire generated smoke, and customers would have seen and smelled this smoke as it developed, it was confined to the engine and at no stage did fire enter the passenger area.

“On-board safety systems operated correctly, and the driver responded professionally to ensure all precautions were taken and passenger safety prioritised.

“Delays to services resulted as Dublin Fire Brigade and Iarnród Éireann maintenance services attended, ensuring the train could move on safely, and the line was closed through Clongriffin for approximately 70 minutes.

“Full services are now operating to schedule.

“The incident will be investigated, and Iarnród Éireann apologises to customers for the disruption to services caused.”

Commuters travelling to Dublin were evacuated from a train this morning after the engine caught fire.

The driver of the 9.40am Drogheda Pearse service halted the train and got all the passengers off safely at Clongriffin.

The fire has been brought under control, although Irish Rail has said that delays can be expected as a result of the incident.
