Commuter areas targeted by burglars, research shows

Security experts are warning home-owners to take more care in securing their houses, following the publication of stark new figures from the AA.

Their poll show that burglaries are becoming more and more prevalent across the country, with 10% more households experiencing crimes than in 2004.

Commuter areas around Dublin city have seen the largest increase, with Louth, Laois, Offaly, Kildare and Meath all experiencing sharp spikes in criminal activity.

"The burglar knows that every morning there will be a mass exodus towards the capital," AA's Arwen Foley explained.

"People go towards Dublin for work, and leave behind whole estates full of empty houses.

"So, a burglar can walk around these empty houses, kind of going unnoticed, as there's not many people around - and if they come across an open window or door, it's easy pickings for them."
