Community Games take place in Athlone

Some 5,000 children and their families are descending on Athlone in Westmeath today for the Community Games.

The August event is mainly centred around track and field sports as well as some team games including camogie, gaelic football and hurling.

"It's all about participation," Gerry Davenport, National President of the HSE Community Games, said.

"Children all over Ireland have big dreams, and just being around here and having fun is our main aim."

"It's not all about winning - it's about making memories and making friends, and maybe kick-starting a healthier habit."
