Coastguard issues warning on dangers of Chinese Lanterns

The Coastguard is warning people of the dangers of using Chinese Lanterns near the sea.

The Coastguard is warning people of the dangers of using Chinese Lanterns near the sea.

It comes after two false alarms were reported in the Clontarf/Dollymount areas of Dublin during the past week.

Rescue crews say it is difficult to differentiate between Chinese lanterns and a red marine distress flare.

The latter is used by water users such as sailing boats and kayakers to indicate they are in immediate danger and require urgent assistance.

The coastguard is asking the public that if you do plan on using Chinese lanterns near the coast, to inform them in advance.
