The mayor of South Dublin County Council has resigned from the Labour Party.

Dermot Looney is the latest of over two dozen councillors to have resigned from the party before May's local elections.

Councillor Looney is one of the youngest members of the council and one of the youngest mayors in South Dublin history.

He had already been nominated to stand as a Labour candidate in the elections in Tallaght this year.
