Children's charity calls for allowance protection from budget cuts

Barnardos is appealing to the government to protect child benefit in the next budget.

The children's charity says young people and their families have taken enough and the group is urging the government to spare already hard-pressed families any further hardship in the upcoming budget.

Fergus Finlay, the CEO of Barnardos, said they are asking for child benefit to be protected.

It has been cut in each of the last five budgets, and it must not be cut again," he said.

He also said the back-to-school clothing allowance needed to be increased for low-income families after it was halved in previous budgets.

"We're not asking for big increases in anything. We're asking the Government not to make things worse for families who are hard-pressed the way things are now."
