School principals have advised parents and children not to buy lavish presents for teachers this Christmas.

The advice from the Irish Primary Principals Network comes after an eight-year-old girl at a County Dublin school gave her teacher a €200 gift voucher for an upmarket city centre department store.

Principals say the practice of children buying expensive gifts for teachers is set to reach epidemic proportions over the next few days.
