Plans are being made to make sweeping changes to the Leaving Cert.
Education Minister Ruairí Quinn is supporting proposals aimed at encouraging critical thinking rather than learning by rote.
The plans, by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and the Higher Education Authority, are expected to be published later today.
Changes to the third-level entry points system could see colleges having to offer more general entry courses, meaning that more than 800 degrees currently on offer would have to be scaled back.
