Matt Carthy is the third MEP elected for the Midlands North-West constituency

The Sinn Féin candidate was elected following count seven in Castlebar tonight.

There is still one more seat to fill with Independent Marian Harkin and Fianna Fáil's Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher fighting for the last spot in the European Parliament.

The winner will join Independent Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan and Fine Gael's Mairead McGuinness who have also been elected in the constituency.

Matt Carthy 129,290

Marian Harkin 105,501

Pat 'the Cope' Gallagher 102,915

* They are now counting Matt Carthy surplus of 5,756 votes.
