Caravan and two cars burned out at scene of dead body in Offaly

Gardaí investigating a man's death in Co Offaly have said that a caravan and two cars were found burnt out at the scene of his death.

It is understood the man was a father of six children and had been only released from prison last month.

He is believed to have suffered a violent death.

They said that, as a result of concerns surrounding the whereabouts of a 47-year-old man, Gardaí conducted a search at Bog Road, Killbride, Clara, County Offaly.

The man's body was found in a drain and the area was immediately sealed off for a full technical examination.

The State Pathologist, Professor Cassidy, visited the scene and carried out a preliminary examination before the body was moved to Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore for a post mortem.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the area in the days leading up to and since Sunday, December 29, to come forward.

They said some people have already come forward with valuable information and an incident room has been set up at Tullamore Garda station.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 057 9327600, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
