Campaigner says Dublin's homeless 'crisis' is worst in 35 years

A leading social justice campaigner says there is a homeless crisis in Dublin.

Fr Peter McVerry says the current situation in the capital is the worst he has seen in the last 35 years.

He also says the Government's plan to end homelessness and rough sleeping by 2016 will not be achieved.

Fr McVerry says more social housing must be provided to address the homeless problem.

"It's in crisis certainly - the worst I have ever known in 35 years of working with homeless people," he said.

"And unfortunately the exits out of homelessness are pretty well blocked at the moment - there's very little social housing available, and there's no access for private-rented.

"The situation going into the future does not look positive."
