Calls for special drugs task force in Dublin

A Dublin Senator is backing calls from the Lord Mayor for a special task force to tackle the drug problem in the capital.

Lord Mayor Christy Burke said a cross community and cross departmental approach is needed to ensure there is a co-ordinated policy across the city.

Fianna Fáil's Darragh O'Brien agrees, and said something needs to be done in response to the escalating drugs crisis which is leading to an increase in homelessness.

"A special task force needs to be set up that has cross-party and cross-community support … that can bring all the agencies together," he said.

"There are certain parts of the city centre, unfortunately, that are nearly no-go areas, because of the problem of drugs and drink."
