A Mayo Fine Gael County Councillor is calling on the Department of the Environment to include dozens of homes in Erris which are effected by pyrite in the Government's compensation scheme.
The Department said problems with pyrite in bricks have not been identified until now and therefore were not included in the original redress scheme.
Councillor Gerry Coyle said these homes should be included in the compensation scheme, but other measures should also be taken to prevent pyrite from affecting homes in the future.
"If this quarry had a vein of [pyrite], or imported the blocks, that it doesn’t do so again, and that in a few years' time people but won't be calling again looking for more schemes," he said.
"If a quarry is supplying product, the product has to be up to standard. There's a thing called product liability insurance - that's what should be covering this."
