The Cabinet is expected to discuss how to mount a Dáil defence of the Taoiseach when it meets in Dublin today.

When the Dáil resumes next week, one of the issues facing the Government will be a Fine Gael motion expressing full support for the Mahon Tribunal.

The move is designed to embarrass the Government following a string of attacks by Cabinet ministers on the tribunal and its treatment of Bertie Ahern.

Today, the Cabinet is expected to discuss a counter-motion that would endorse the Taoiseach and express continued support in his leadership, despite the ongoing controversy over his financial and tax affairs.
