Burton promises to tax rich if she wins Labour leadership

Joan Burton has said if she wins the leadership race for the Labour Party she will ensure rich people pay more tax.

It is the first campaign pledge from the Minister for Social Protection since she announced her candidacy yesterday.

However, speaking in Maynooth this afternoon she added there will not be any increases in tax rates for anyone.

"I don't think we need to increase the rates of taxation, but there are people in the Irish system where there are some very attractive exemptions under certain conditions.

"That can result in people who maybe on very high incomes paying relatively little tax" she said.
