Burton: Inquiry will examine 'all relevant matters' in Garda Tapes controversy

A Government minister has said she expects "all relevant matters" to fall within the remit of the inquiry set up to investigate the Garda Tapes controversy.

The Cabinet is expected to agree terms of reference for Mister Justice Fennelly's probe when they meet tomorrow.

It is unclear whether the inquiry would include the events that lead up to the retirement of the former Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan.

Speaking in Cork, Joan Burton says the terms of reference will be decided following consultation with the investigating judge and the attorney general.

Ms Burton said: "I would expect that he will be enquiring into all the relevant matters around the issues that have come to light.

"They have come to light on our watch and it's for this Government to resolve the issues in a way that upholds the importance and the significance of the Garda Siochána and the respect and trust that the people should have in that force."
