Burton: Free GP care in line with modern medical practice

The Tánaiste Joan Burton has said the Coalition will press on with rolling out free GP to the entire population.

The policy is to be rolled out for under 6s in the New Year, while people over 70 will also be given free doctor visits.

The plan is to extend the scheme to the entire population over a number of years.

Joan Burton said free GP care was the way to take pressure off our hospitals.

"It is in line with modern medical practice that the key to health in the general population is to provide regular check-ups and examinations so that if there are problems for people, they are captured as quickly as possible." she said.
