Burton enters Labour leadership race

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has declared her candidacy to become leader of the Labour Party.

She paid tribute to outgoing leader Eamon Gilmore, who announced his intention to resign yesterday.

"I would particularly like to thank Eamon Gilmore for his unstinting service and commitment to both party and the country, and to state my respect for the dignified manner in which he has ensured stability of Government while his successor is elected," she said.
