The Tánaiste Joan Burton has given the clearest indication yet that the next Budget may mark the end of austerity.

Burton: Economic the outlook 'very optimistic'

The Tánaiste Joan Burton has given the clearest indication yet that the next Budget may mark the end of austerity.

Ms Burton says the latest Exchequer returns and economic forecasts show the economy is making real headway.

She says it is still too early to tell just how big the next Budget adjustment will be, but that it will be less than the €2bn planned by the Troika.

She says if the Government stays focused, the next Budget could mark a real turning point.

She said: "I would say the outlook is very optimistic and all of the professional forecasters have been saying that as well.

"The more growth we get back into the economy the less difficulties there are in terms of Budget adjustments, but we still have to be very careful and watch all of the cents as well as the euros."
