Burton: Difficult to know the motivation of whoever leaked Labour Party poll

Tánaiste Joan Burton has said that whoever leaked details of an internal poll has done a disservice to the Labour party.

The internal analysis suggested that Labour will lose 20 seats in the upcoming election.

It named future leadership candidates Alex White, Seán Sherlock, and Michael McCarthy as those likely to lose their seats.

It was suggested that Environment Minister Alan Kelly leaked misleading figures on the poll to damage potential leadership rivals - something he denies.

Joan Burton said that whoever it was, they have not helped anyone in Labour.

"Well, I've been talking to Alan, and I think like everybody else he has absolutely deplored whoever was responsible for doing that," she said.

"It's difficult to know the motivation of whoever was doing that, because they certainly weren't helping themselves, and they were certainly not focusing on getting Labour Party people elected."
