Boyle: Changes should be 'substantial'

The Green Party has said it is seeking substantial changes to the Programme for Government.

Talks between the Greens and Fianna Fáil will intensify in the coming weeks on a new deal for the remainder of the coalition's term in office.

Two-thirds of the Green Party membership would have to endorse any new deal at a special convention in October.

There are already significant concerns among members about the NAMA proposal to deal with the banking crisis.

Green Party Chairman Dan Boyle said the negotiations are not simply cosmetic.

“I think the changes should be substantial. I believe we are at mid-term in the life of this government.

“The circumstances from when we entered into Government are now radically different and I think that we have to not only tweak but we have to dramatically overhaul what Government is about,” he said.
