The Covid-19 outbreak has taken its toll on the fitness industry in Ireland with many gyms and leisure centres forced to close their doors from public health directives.
Sports clubs and teams were affected too with numerous fixtures postponed and many competitions in suspense.
Headon Boxing academy was no different and had to close temporarily due to the coronavirus however the academy's owners got creative.
Twins, Sean and Paddy Headon, 25, started digital classes online for their members to work up a sweat from home. The programme features 40 online classes per week and requires no extra equipment except water bottles as weight substitutes.
Backyard boxers can complete cardio challenges, core work, shadowboxing and bodyweight exercises. The classes are suitable for all levels from beginners upwards.
Speaking about the new programme, Paddy Headon said: “What’s happening in the world right now is hard to swallow. We did what we had to do to keep our team and community safe. With our gyms temporarily closed, we wanted to find another way to reach our community and new members alike."
The main reason we moved online was to fight back.
He said: "People’s routines were thrown into chaos, and it’s scary. But, exercise is in our control – and boxing is incredible in terms of stress relief, improving your mood and self-confidence. We hope punching will help get us and our community through the next few weeks.”
Headon Boxing Academy has three boxing studios in Sandyford, Grand Canal Dock and Ballsbridge. Both twins are Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) coaches and former junior Irish Boxing Champions.
