Human remains recovered in Ireland today are believed to be those of an Englishman who has been missing since April.
Plastering contractor Thomas (Tommy) Thompson disappeared from his home in Co Laois nine months ago.
Gardaí investigating the whereabouts of the 59-year-old, who was originally from Yorkshire, confirmed they discovered a body at Dysart, Portlaoise, this afternoon.
A Garda spokesman said: “A search of the area commenced early this morning as part of their ongoing investigation.
“The body remains at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
“The scene is currently subject of a forensic and technical examination by a Garda Crime Scene Investigation Team and the office of the State Pathologist has been advised.”
Mr Thompson was reported missing from his home on Borris Road, Portlaoise, on April 20.
In December, two German nationals who previously worked with the plasterer appeared in court where they were charged with theft from the missing man’s address.
Gardaí stepped up their search by combing the area between Stradbally and Portlaoise for clues, but made no significant finds.
Superintendent Philip Lyons, who leads the investigation, said the great support and assistance from people in the Portlaoise area regarding the investigation had proved invaluable.
Officers are still anxious to locate Mr Thompson’s vehicle – a blue Renault van, registration number 06-LS-2453.
Anyone with information regarding Mr Thompson’s disappearance is also urged to come forward.
