Bathing suspended at Sandymount following sewage overflow

Dublin City Council has today issued a temporary ban on bathing at Sandymount Strand, in the most recent incident involving water quality in Dublin Bay.

The notice at Sandymount follows an emergency sewage overflow that was activated last Friday following intense rainfall. The overflow facility diluted raw sewage with surface water and discharged it on to Sandymount Strand.

A water sample was taken on Friday, the results of which today showed the water did not meet minimum bathing requirements.

Another sample was taken today and the results will be known on Wednesday.

No-swim notices have been placed on a number of the country's beaches in recent weeks. Last month, Bettystown, Co Meath, was identified as having increased levels of e-coli in the water.

And late last week, the temporary notice on Sandymount was accompanied by notices at both Killiney and White Rock beaches, though both of those were cleared by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council on Friday.
