A baby boy has been seriously injured in a car crash in Co Longford. He is in a critical condition in hospital.

A baby boy has been seriously injured in a car crash in Co Longford. He is in a critical condition in hospital.

Gardaí said the infant, who is believed to be about six months old, was travelling in the car with three adults and three other children.

The collision just outside Ballymahon on the Lanesborough Road at Terlicken Cross occurred between 1.15pm and 1.45pm this afternoon. No other vehicle was involved.

All seven occupants of the car were rushed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar, where the baby boy is critically ill.

The others are not believed to have suffered life-threatening injures.

Motorists are warned that the road will be closed until at least 8pm as accident investigators examine the scene.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses and diversions are in place.
