One of the first babies to be born in the New Year arrived in dramatic fashion - in a jeep on the way to hospital in Dublin.

One of the first babies to be born in the New Year arrived in dramatic fashion - in a jeep on the way to hospital in Dublin.

The baby girl, who was born to circus performer Tara Gerbola, arrived at 3.13am while on the way to the Coombe Maternity Hospital.

She weighs 6 pounds 6 ounces and mother and baby are doing well.

The first baby born at the Coombe in 2011 was a boy who arrived at 01.11am to Gillian Carry from Rathfarnham, he weighing 9 pounds 12 ounces and is also doing well.

In Limerick, a little girl arrived at six minutes past midnight at Limerick Regional Hospital.

Her parents are from the Dooradoyle area of the city and both mum and baby are said to be doing well.
