ASBOs for unruly teenagers come into force from today

Anti-social behaviour orders for unruly teenagers are due come into force across the country from today.

Anti-social behaviour orders for unruly teenagers are due come into force across the country from today.

The measure was introduced for adults at the start of this year, but gardaí will now be able to seek the imposition of the orders on 12 to 18-year-olds.

Under the scheme, gardaí can ask the courts to impose ASBOs on people involved in anti-social behaviour.

The orders place restrictions on the activities of those affected and can lead to imprisonment if they are not obeyed.

Children's rights groups have expressed concern that they could end up criminalising certain teenagers and may not be used as a last resort, as promised by the Government.
