The Army bomb disposal unit has removed a World War One Bomb from Kilrush, Co. Clare, this afternoon.

The early 20th century, solid shot, artillery projectile was taken from the beach near Cappa Pier in the last hour.

It is understood a local man had acquired the World War One artefact, believing it to be safe, but contacted Gardaí when he grew concerned about the presence of a fuse.

A Defence Forces spokesperson has confirmed that the device was removed from the scene and there was no explosive content found in the bomb.
