Prosecutions in Anglo Irish Bank are inevitable, according to Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan.
While he admitted prosecutions were a matter for the DPP, he said the authorities were engaged in a very wide-ranging and "productive" inquiry into dealings at the bank.
It is now 18 months since the State put in place the banks guarantee to ensure our biggest banks would not fail. Anglo Irish Bank was nationalised four months later after risky lending practices made the bank vulnerable.
On February 25th last year the Financial Regulator formally asked the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation to investigate into the bank.
Minister Lenihan said it was not possible to put a timescale on the completion of investigations at the bank.
He also told the Sunday Independent that Anglo, which is to announce losses of €13bn, will not be allowed to fail.
He said half the bank would "disappear" into Nama and the remaining half would be dealt with by new management.
