Dublin City Councillors are calling on the Government to ensure all new Luas trams could have the ability to drive themselves.
The call follows 12 days of strike action which brought the service to a halt over recent months.
Fine Gael Councillor Dr Paddy Smyth has received backing from his local authority colleagues, urging that all new trams are fitted with self-driving software.
The motion will now go to the Minister for Transport.
"Essentially, ensure that any new rolling stock is future-proof, so that it can be fitted with self-driving software, so that in the future we could move to a point where our trams could, essentially, drive themselves," said Councillor Smyth.
