Aer Lingus flight death: Portuguese woman suspected of drug trafficking released without charge

Gardaí are to prepare a file for the DPP after releasing without charge a Portuguese woman arrested at Cork Airport on Sunday on suspicion of drug trafficking.

The 44-year-old Portuguese woman was arrested at Cork airport when Gardaí searched her luggage after she disembarked from the Aer Lingus flight from Lisbon.

She was brought to Togher Garda Station in Cork, where she was questioned about whether she knew Brazilian John Santos Gurjao.

The 24-year-old took ill and died on the same flight from Lisbon.

A post-mortem on Monday confirmed that Mr Santos Gurjao had ingested up to 100 pellets of cocaine.

Gardaí are continuing to liaise with the Brazilian embassy regarding the repatriation of Mr Santos Gurjao's remains back to his family in Boa Vista, in north western Brazil.
