More than 86,500 home loans were more than three months in arrears at the end of September, an increase of about 5,000 on figures released at the end of June.

More than 86,500 home loans were more than three months in arrears at the end of September, an increase of about 5,000 on figures released at the end of June.

However the figures just released by the Central Bank also show the rate of increase is slowing down.

The fact that unemployment has stabilised means the rate of people falling into arrears is also slowing down.

In addition, the banks are putting in place agreements with homeowners in long-term arrears.
