A pilot project aimed at encouraging children to eat more fruit and vegetables is to be rolled out in schools throughout the country.

The 'Food Dudes' programme rewards kids for eating their greens in the hope that they will keep up the good habit and influence their peers.

A fund of €4m is being pumped into the initiative, which got a prestigious award from the World Health Organisation.

Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan backed the project saying she was confident it would result in a healthier lifestyle as the children grow up.
