A 27-year-old man remains in Garda custody in Kilkenny this morning, in connection with the fatal stabbing of Mairead Moran in the city centre on Thursday evening.

A 27-year-old man remains in Garda custody in Kilkenny this morning, in connection with the fatal stabbing of Mairead Moran in the city centre on Thursday evening.

Twenth-eight-year-old Ms Moran was stabbed to death at her workplace in broad daylight at around 8.30pm on Thursday evening in the Holland and Barrett shop at The Market Cross Shopping Centre in Kilkenny.

Ms Moran suffered several knife wounds before her attacker fled the scene.

She was rushed to St Luke's Hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Locals say they are still in shock and have paid tribute to Ms Moran, who was well known and liked in the city.

A post mortem was carried out at Waterford Regional Hospital yesterday. Gardaí have also been reviewing cctv footage of the scene.

A 27-year-old man arrested in connection with the fatal assault remains in Garda custody this morning.

It is understood he was known to Ms Moran.
