More than 1,300 public-sector workers turned out last night for the latest regional meeting arranged by the new alliance set up to oppose government cutbacks.

The Frontline Services Alliance includes trade unions representing Gardaí, nurses, prison officers and other public servants who provide 'round-the-clock' services.

Last night's meeting at the Helix theatre in Dublin was the latest in a series of regional gatherings which have been attended by a total of around 5,000 public-sector employees.

The leadership of the alliance is due to meet next week to discuss the next step in its campaign against the implementation of some of the cutbacks recommended by An Bord Snip Nua.
