A 12-year-old was treated for alcohol problems in Cork earlier this year, it has emerged.

The child was among up to 200 people being treated for addictions, including alcohol, through the drug and alcohol addiction services run by the Health Service Executive in Cork, according to the Evening Echo .

Medical officer Dr Declan O’Brien revealed the information as National Alcohol Awareness Week got underway today.

Currently, the youngest client of the services is 15 years of age, while the oldest is 71.

Meanwhile, police in the UK have revealed a girl aged just nine has needed hospital treatment after drinking vodka.

Officers in Durham said they spoke to her parents last month.

They are also investigating why a 12-year-old ended up in A-and-E on three consecutive weekends for alcohol related injuries.
