J-Lo signs up for Chilean miner flick

Jennifer Lopez will star in Chilean miner drama 'The 33'.

The actress-and-singer has signed on for a role in a low-budget biographical film which will tell the story of the 33 miners who were trapped under ground for 69 days in 2010, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lopez will star alongside 'The Skin I Live In' actor Antonio Banderas, Martin Sheen and '300' actor Rodrigo Santoro in the flick which is being produced by Mike Medavoy.

Medavoy quickly secured the rights to tell bring the harrowing story to life on the big screen after the incident grabbed headlines around the world in 2010.

Banderas is set to play the lead role of Mario Sepulveda, who was nicknamed 'Super Mario' for his heroic efforts in helping the miners to safety, meanwhile, Sheen will play the father of a miner and Santoro will play a trapped miner.

Patricia Riggen is set to direct the film based on a screenplay from Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera.

Production is due to begin later this year.

Lopez's last on-screen credit was Taylor Hackford's thriller 'Parker', starring opposite Jason Statham.

The actress will be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week for her long career in film and music.
