Irish documentary 'the Summit' up for Sundance award

An Irish film is up for a top prize in tonight's Sundance Film Festival Awards in the US, known as the Oscars for independent film-makers.

'The Summit' is a documentary by film-maker Nick Ryan, and tells the tragic story of Irish climber Ger McDonnell, who was killed attempting to climb K2 with a number of his colleagues.

The distribution rights for the film have also been bought by AMC, the network behind the hit series 'The Walking Dead'.

Speaking from Sundance, director Nick Ryan said he would not be too disappointed if they did not win the gong.

"Getting here is the win," he said. "The reaction has been phenomenal and we've been getting some very good reviews.

"It's wonderful to be nominated in such illustrious company. We'll have to wait and see...I'm not holding out for anything."
