In the most WTF news of the day, a British backpacker found a leech measuring three inches long living in her nose a month after returning home from South East Asia.
Lovely.
Daniela Liverani kept having nose bleeds but thought they were due to a burst blood vessel after a recent motorcycle crash.
It was only when she was having a shower at home in Edinburgh last Thursday that she discovered the real reason behind the nosebleeds.
“After I got home, the nosebleeds stopped and I started seeing something sticking out of my nostril. I just thought it was congealed blood from the nosebleeds," she told the Sunday Mail.
“When I was in the shower, he would come right out as far as my bottom lip and I could see him sticking out the bottom of my nose.
"So when that happened, I jumped out of the shower to look really closely in the mirror and I saw ridges on him. That's when I realised he was an animal.”
That is one of the most horrifying things we've ever heard.
Ms. Liverani went to the hospital where the doctor removed 'Mr. Curly' (she gave him a nickname- as you do). She was told that if it hadn't been removed, it might have found its way to her brain.
“It was agony – whenever the doctor grabbed him, I could feel the leech tugging at the inside of my nose,” she said.
“Then all of a sudden, after half an hour, the pain stopped and the doctor had the leech in the tweezers. He was about as long as my forefinger and as fat as my thumb.”
Ms. Liverani told the BBC that she believes she picked up the parasite while swimming in Vietnam or Cambodia and that while she could
she thought it was just a blood clot.Right, we're done. That's it. Never swimming again. Or going outside.
