Malayan sun bear cubs have become visible to visitors of the Royal Burgers' Zoo in the Netherlands for the first time.
Two Malayan sun bear cubs entered the indoor enclosure at Royal Burgers' Zoo, Arnhem, the Netherlands for the very first time today.
The twins, who were born on May 7, are the first birth Malayan sun bears in Holland. They spent over two months in the nursery with their mother before being visible to the public.
Only 40 Malayan sun bears are found in zoos across Europe.
A shortage of males, only 12 of the 40 sun bears in European zoos, and the fact that not all of the bear boars are fertile, makes the birth of these two sun bears extra special.
The gender of the two newly-born Arnhem bear cubs is still to be determined as they have not yet been touched by humans.
Footage of the newborns was shot in the early hours of today at the Royal Burgers' Zoo.
Cubs' first discovery of the indoor enclosure
In the early morning of Friday, the two Malayan sun bear cubs faced their fear of the unknown and entered the brand new indoor enclosure with their mother by their side.
The curious cubs explored the new living space in full and even tried to climb up some poles as well with. When they have grown further in the near future, they will be introduced to the vast, a large outdoor enclosure.
From Scotland with love
On Friday, November 30, 2018, a bear boar travelled from Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland to Arnhem.
It was hoped that his arrival would stimulate the two residing female Malayan sun bears at Royal Burgers' Zoo.
Both females arrived from Cologne Zoo in Germany to Arnhem in April 2008. Very soon mating of both females was recorded by the zookeepers.
