Today is international toilet day but it’s not as funny as you think

November 19 is World Toilet Day.

But before you roll out the jokes, it’s not as funny as it sounds.

This official United Nations international observance day, celebrated all over the world since 2001, is a day of action that aims to break the taboo around toilets and draw attention to the global sanitation crisis.

Can you imagine not having a toilet?

Although unthinkable for most of us, this is a harsh reality for many – in fact, one in three people on the globe does not have access to a toilet!

Some scary facts:

  • 62.5% of people around the world don’t have access to safe sanitation.
  • 1.8 billion people use a drinking water source that could be contaminated with faeces.
  • 4.5 billion live without a safe toilet. That means: 1 in 3 people on the globe does not have access to a toilet!

World Toilet Day is about nature-based solutions to our sanitation needs.

World Toilet Day was created to raise global awareness of the daily struggle for proper sanitation that a staggering 2.6 billion people face every day. This year, we wanted to join other groups, such as the media, the private sector, development organizations and civil society in this global movement to advocate for safe toilets

Niall McGarry, Founder of btw, said.

This year, btw baths&tiles Ireland have decided to take action and ensure that everyone has a safe toilet by 2030.

To mark the day, btw baths&tiles Ireland are partnering with Peter McVerry Trust, a charity committed to tackling homelessness and social disadvantage in Ireland.

The Irish company are offering €10 off each WC sale from all (7) of their showrooms today, as a donation, but not less than €1,000.

Additionally, any customer buying a WC in one of their showrooms today will get a 25% discount off their chosen toilet price.
