This summer has seen some very revealing fashion trends come to the fore.

First there was ‘midriff floss’(straps that wind seductively round your waist), then there were ‘napkin tops’ (tiny backless tops made out of very little material). Now, we’re seeing the rise of the ‘super crop top’, and it’s all thanks to a handful of pop musicians.

What exactly is a super crop top? Essentially, it’s a much shorter version of the traditional crop top. Usually with long sleeves, the top is only a few inches long, the hem not even covering the wearer’s chest.

Some come with a bandeau top attached, while others are meant to be styled over a bralet or strapless top.

British singer Dua Lipa is something of a super crop connoisseur. She donned a long-sleeved body top for her performance at last year’s MTV EMAs, and more recently showed off a cream ruched version on Instagram.

Fellow Brit singer Charli XCX chose a short-sleeved super crop top when she presented the Outstanding Music Artist gong at last month’s GLAAD awards, while Megan Thee Stallion cemented the garment’s status as the style of the summer with her gloved zebra print design in the epic WAP video.

As you can imagine, where pop stars lead, influencers follow and now super crop tops are all over Instagram, but they’re not quite so scandalous as some of the celebrity styles.

Want to try the trend yourself? Retailers like ASOS, I Saw It First and PrettyLittleThing have got you covered (or should that be uncovered?), so take your pick, but you might want to add a bandeau or bra top to your basket at the same time…
